First, a special note about L.A. County: As counties go, Los Angeles is quite remarkable. Yes, there are a huge number of CBC’s in LA county (12!); but also, in all of the United States, San Diego County is the only other that can lay claim to pelagic birds, montane birds, and desert birds, all residing comfortably in their own ecosystems. Yes, seeing a Verdin, a LeConte’s Thrasher, and a Mountain Bluebird on one LA County CBC; then turning around the next day and seeing a Parasitic Jeager, a Black Oystercatcher, and a Lewis’ Woodpecker on another LA County CBC, is entirely possible - although not easy!
Lancaster CBC Analysis Over the Last 45 Years and Beyond
For 2023, we tallied a total of 16,177 (16.2K) birds. Sounds like a lot! It isn’t especially in light of Count history. After excluding one anomalous** year, the adjusted Overall Count Avg is (33.0K/yr); that’s right, we’ve lost more than half (50.9%) of our birds in the Antelope Valley over the last 45 years, compared to our adjusted Count Average!
124th Audubon Christmas Bird Count
Join a Christmas Bird Count
The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running community science project in the nation. Birders, from beginners to advanced, have participated in this once-a-year count effort within established 15-mile diameter circles (see maps). Compilers and participants work together to ensure that important bird habitats are covered, and there is always room to add yard and local patch observations, so long as the number of people observing and the time spent observing are recorded, along with a full list and numbers of all species observed. Los Angeles Audubon Society sponsors three counts, led by experienced compilers.
