This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for September 8, 2023.

The TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE continued on the north side of the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook through September 8.

A returning and presumably wintering PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was along lower Ballona Creek at and the Ballona Salt Pan from September 4-5.

Up to seven RED KNOTS were at the Ballona Salt Pan (Ballona Creek upstream from Pacific Ave.) from September 3-6.

A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was on the LA River in Long Beach above the Willow Street crossing on September 2.

A BLACK TERN was along Ballona Creek at Pacific Ave. in Playa del Rey on September 2.

A COMMON TERN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for access) on September 8.

YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS included five at Ballona Lagoon in Marina del Rey, one at Alamitos Bay, and one at the San Gabriel River mouth in Long Beach this past week.  Another was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for access) on September 8.

An early MERLIN was in Juniper Hills on September 2.

An EASTERN KINGBIRD was in the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on September 7 south of the south end of Woodley Ave.

LUCY’S WARBLERS were at La Mirada Creek Park from September 1-5 and along the LA River in the Sepulveda Basin on September 1.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at DeForest Park in Long Beach on September 5 near the basketball courts.  Another was in Beverly Hills on September 6.

AMERICAN REDSTARTS were near Jackson Lake in the east San Gabriel Mountains on September 3, in the Santa Monica Mountains at Nicholas Flat on September 4 and at the south end of Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach on September 6.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was on San Clemente Island on September 6 and a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was there in September 7.

A RED-FACED WARBLER was at a residence in Palos Verdes from September 7-8.

A SUMMER TANAGER was in San Dimas Canyon below the lower dam on September 3.

A PAINTED BUNTING was in Manhattan Beach on September 7.
