This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 8.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Sunnyside Cemetery in Long Beach on September 2.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through October 7.  It is usually by the UCLA boat ramp upstream from the Pacific Ave bridge.


A STILT SANDPIPER was at Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) from October 6-7.

A BROWN BOOBY was offshore between the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Santa Catalina Island on October 5.

An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON continued along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach in the vicinity of Willow Street through October 7.  Be aware this bird does move up and down the river.  Up to two TROPICAL KINGBIRDS were below the Willow Street crossing through October 5. 


Up to three YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh and at the nearby Ballona Creek mouth through October 6.

A flight of up to 50 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS were at Jackson Lake near Big Pines on October 3.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS were at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach on October 1, at Entradero Park in Torrance from October 4-7 and along Ballona Creek east of Centinela Ave. on October 5.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on October 2, in Area 2 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach on October 2, at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on October 3, at Arcadia County Park on October 7, and at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve (by the west shore of the wildlife lake) in Van Nuys on October 5.

A DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCO was in Juniper Hills on October 7.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail from October 1-7 south of the Los Coyotes Diagonal.

At least one BOBOLINK continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through October 3 in the large south basin.  Another BOBOLINK was by Monte Verde Park at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood from October 5-6. 


A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance (in the "Wilson's Alley" willows) through October 7.  Other BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at DeForest Park in Long Beach (near the park administration buildings) on October 2, at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach on October 4, by Monte Verde Park at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood from October 5-6 and at Apollo Park near Lancaster on October 5.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was at Peck Park in San Pedro on October 3.

BLACKPOLL WARBLERS were at Piute Ponds on October 2, at Legg Lake in South El Monte (on the east side of the south lake) on October 3, at the small park on the south side of Los Feliz Blvd. on the east side of the Los Angeles River on October 6 and in Signal Hill on October 7.

A PALM WARBLER was near the southeast corner of Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on October 1.  Other PALM WARBLERS were at Silverlake Meadow (on the east side of the reservoir off Silver Lake Blvd.) on October 6 and at Piute Ponds (west of parking area 1) on October 6.

A PAINTED REDSTART continued at Inglewood Park Cemetery through October 6.  The bird frequents a large oak in the Pinecrest section.  
A SUMMER TANAGER continued near the entrance of Occidental College in Eagle Rock through October 1.
