This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 14.

 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was at Malibu Lagoon on January 8.

 

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along Ballona Creek (usually between Lincoln and the 90 Freeway) through January 13.

 

Thirty-three MOUNTAIN PLOVER continued at the A&G Sod Farm in the south Antelope Valley through January 8. The location is at 50th Street East and Avenue N. This is private property. Please bird from the road only. 

 

The LAUGHING GULL at the Rio Hondo Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera was reported through January 7, but it has not been reported since. Entry to this part of the spreading basins is via a gate on Washington Blvd. near Paramount Blvd. or through holes in the fence along the east border.

 

A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued through January 9 in South El Monte along the San Gabriel River. This bird was at the east end of Thienes Ave at the confluence of San Jose Creek.

 

Another NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued at Westlake Lake in Westlake Village through January 10.

 

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through January 10, often seen flying over the intersection of Myrtle and Greystone and near Grand Ave. Park.

 

Another ZONE-TAILED HAWK was seen flying over La Crescenta January 10.

 

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continued at Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (permission required for entry) through January 11.

 

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through January 8.

 

A “BLACK” MERLIN (of the subspecies suckleyi) was in Pasadena on January 8.

 

ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS continued near the north entrance to the wildlife area in the Sepulveda Basin through January 8 and at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach through January 9 (along the cemetery fence). Another ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at the Rolling Hills Landfill Loop in Rolling Hills Estates on January 8.

 

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued near the north side of Entradero Park in Torrance through January 12.

 

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh from January 8-11.

 

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was in Beverly Hills on January 7.

 

PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS were at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on January 8 (north of the Berkshire Creek bridge) and at the California Botanic Garden (formerly Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden) in Claremont on January 13.

 

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale continued through January 12. It stays just below the Riverside Drive bridge and ranges from the southern part of the park down into the river channel.

 

Another EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through January 11.

 

A CASSIN’S VIREO continued at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia through January 10 in the picnic area west of the parking lot.

 

Another CASSIN’S VIREO was in Burbank on January 13.

 

A GRAY CATBIRD was at a residence in Glendora on January 12.

 

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 9 near the north shore play area, and another did so in Chavez Ravine at Elysian Park through January 13.

 

A HARRIS’S SPARROW continued at a residence in Monrovia through January 9.

 

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were in the upper part of Willow Springs Park in Long Beach through January 8, at the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia on January 12 and in Rolling Hills Estates and in Glendora on January 10.

 

A HOODED ORIOLE reportedly continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino through January 7 usually near the north end of the desert garden.

 

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued just north of Carson Street at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 13. A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was present here through January 9 and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen through January 13.

 

Another BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued in the willows at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 12, and one was at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach on January 13.

 

An immature male AMERICAN RESTART continued between Burbank Blvd. and the Los Angeles River along Haskell Creek in the Sepulveda Basin through January 14.

 

A PALM WARBLER was at Col. Leon H. Washington Park in Los Angeles on January 10 near the middle of the park.

 

A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino through January 9. It has been hanging around the southwest corner of the main parking lot just to the north and west of the pedestrian main entrance, favoring the Tipu trees. A LUCY’S WARBLER was in the same area through January 13.

 

The PAINTED REDSTART at Inglewood Park Cemetery continued through January 12. It stays in the lone large oak tree in the Pinecrest section.

 

SUMMER TANAGERS continued in the southwest part of Wardlow Park in Long Beach through January 11 and at Legg Lake in South El Monte (south of restroom 4) through January 13.
