This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 15, 2023.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER at the Ballona Creek mouth continued through December 11.  This bird has been at various places along the creek above the Pacific Ave. bridge and on the nearby Salt Pan.

A LITTLE GULL was offshore south of San Pedro on December 10.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included a first cycle along the Los Angeles River from December 8-11 by Maywood Riverfront Park, one at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on December 8, one at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds on December 11 and one continuing at Lake Hollywood through December 12.

Several YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon and near the Ballona Creek mouth through December 12.

A SWAINSON’S HAWK was at Rosemead Park in Rosemead on December 10.

At least one ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued Monrovia through December 8 and another was at City of Hope in Duarte on December 11.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued on Santa Catalina Island through December 10.

A BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER was at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates from December 9-10 by the Arizona Crossing.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 15 along Ave. C.

WESTERN FLYCATCHERS were at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates on December 9, at Legg Lake in South El Monte on December 13 (north shore of the middle lake by the green dinosaur sculpture) and at Biola University in La Mirada on December 15.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street in Long Beach through December 8, at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera (two birds) through December 14 and in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through December 9.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through December 15.  Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1400, -118.2884, but the bird moves around the area. 

CASSIN’S VIREOS were at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 14 in the west side riparian and at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 10.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale on December 8 near the dam south of Parking lot 6.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were north of the Nature Center at Eaton Canyon from December 8-13, continuing in Rolling Hills through December 10, at Sycamore Canyon in Whittier from December 9-13 and at Bailey Canyon Park in Sierra Madre on December 12.

SWAMP SPARROWS included up to three continuing at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 15 and two at St. Andrew’s Abbey near Valyermo through December 10.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas along Kiko’s Trail through December 11.

A HOODED ORIOLE continued in Rolling Hills from December 4-10 and one was at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino in the Desert Garden on December 8.

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds from December 15.  It moves about the area and has been in the riverbed and also around the basins.

Another RUSTY BLACKBIRD was on the south side of the main lake at Hansen Dam on December 9.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at Banning Park in Wilmington on December 12, at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 14 and at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (along the southwest side) through December 14.

An AMERICAN REDSTART continued at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through December 9 near the center of the park.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 9 in the southwest area of the basin.

A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through December 12.  It has been at the south end of Avila Park below the Willow Street crossing.  Two more were at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds through December 12 and one was at John Anson Ford Park in Bell Gardens on December 12.

The PINE WARBLER continued at Wardlow Park in Long Beach through December 10 on the east side north of the Community Center.

Another PINE WARBLER was at Satellite Park in Cerritos on December 10 in the southeast part of the park.

A PAINTED REDSTART continued in San Dimas Canyon Park through December 13.

SUMMER TANAGERS included one continuing in the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park through December 14, one at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach on December 8, one continuing on the north side of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 9, continuing at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles through December 10 and one in Pasadena on December 11.
