This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 22, 2023.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER at the Ballona Creek mouth continued through December 16.  This bird has been at various places along the creek above the Pacific Ave. bridge and on the nearby Salt Pan.

A LAUGHING GULL was at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro from December 16-21.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included up to two along the Los Angeles River through December 17 by Maywood Riverfront Park, one Downy Road in Vernon (also on the LA River) on December 16, one at Malibu Lagoon from December 17-20 and one at the Hollywood Reservoir through December 21.

A RED-THROATED LOON was at Legg Lake in South El Monte on December 16.

Up to thirteen YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon and near the Ballona Creek mouth through December 21.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through December 20.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was in the east Antelope Valley on December 16.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued on Santa Catalina Island through December 17.  Others were at Orange Grove Park in Hacienda Heights on December 21 and at Tournament Park in Pasadena on December 22.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at Pierce College in Woodland Hills on December 16.

A BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER was at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates through December 15 by the Arizona Crossing.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street in Long Beach through December 17, in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through December 16 and at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through December 21.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through December 22.  Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1409, -118.2880, but the bird moves around the area.  A HEPATIC TANAGER also continued in this area through December 22.

HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on December 16, at Tournament Park in Pasadena through December 18 and at Ernest E. Debs Park on December 18.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 18 along Ave. C.

Another DUSKY FLYCATCHER was at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (by Berkshire Creek riparian area) from December 16-19.

WESTERN FLYCATCHERS were at Biola University in La Mirada on December 15, at Little Harbor on Santa Catalina Island on December 17 and one at Ernest E. Debs Regional Park on December 18.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through December 17.

A continuing YELLOW-GREEN VIREO was just southwest of Monte Verde Park in Lakewood through December 16.  Also continuing nearby at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail was a BROWN THRASHER.

A PACIFIC WREN continued near the southwest corner of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 22.  A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER also continued in this area through December 22.

DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCOS were at Bennett Park in Westlake Village on December 17 and at Ernest E. Debs Park on December 18.

A “LARGE-BILLED” SAVANNAH SPARROW was at the Los Cerritos Wetlands on December 16.

SWAMP SPARROWS included at least two continuing at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 18 and one along the San Gabriel River at the Live Oak crossing on December 15.

An ORCHARD ORIOLE was on San Clemente Island on December 19 and a HOODED ORIOLE continued in Rolling Hills through December 21.

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds from December 19.  It moves about the area and has been in the riverbed and also around the basins.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was on the east side of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena from December 16-21.

A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through December 19.  It has been at the south end of Avila Park below the Willow Street crossing.  Another continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds through December 19 and one was Veteran’s Park in Sylmar on December 16.

PAINTED REDSTARTS continued in Brentwood through December 17 and at San Dimas Canyon Park through December 21.

SUMMER TANAGERS were in the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park, in Malibu, at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach, at Orizaba Park in Long Beach and in Bel Air this past week.
