This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 29, 2023. 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was at Castaic Lagoon from December 27-28.  Another was reported off Playa del Rey Beach on December 24.

A LAUGHING GULL was at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro through December 24.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included one along the Los Angeles River through December 26 between Atlantic and Slauson, one at Downey Road in Vernon (also on the LA River) through on December 24, one at Malibu Lagoon through December 24 and one at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through December 27.

A RED-THROATED LOON was on Bouquet Reservoir on December 27.

A CATTLE EGRET was at Hansen Dam on December 23.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through December 27 and another was at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena from December 22-23.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued on Santa Catalina Island through December 28 near Two Harbors.

A CRESTED CARACARA was seen briefly flying over Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on December 27.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street in Long Beach through December 26 and at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through December 27.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through December 28.  Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1409, -118.2880, but the bird moves around the area.  A HEPATIC TANAGER also continued in this area through December 27.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 29 along Ave. C.

Another DUSKY FLYCATCHER was at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (by Berkshire Creek riparian area) through December 28.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER was at Murphy Ranch Park in Whitter on December 26.

A BELL’S VIREO was at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino on December 23.

A PACIFIC WREN continued at Buckhorn Campground through December 28.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach from December 27-28.

The DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO at Sailboat Cove in Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas continued through December 22.

SWAMP SPARROWS included one continuing at St. Andrew’s Abbey through December 26 (upstream from the Valyermo Road bridge and one near Two Harbors on Santa Catalina Island through December 28.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was along the LA Aqueduct near Littlerock on December 23.

HOODED ORIOLES included a bird continuing in Rolling Hills through December 23 and one at Elysian Park in Chavez Ravine on December 26. 

Also in Chavez Ravine on December 26 was an adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE north of the playground area.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were in the southwest part of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 28, at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach through December 23, at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through December 23 and at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 28.

Also at Hahamongna Watershed Park were a PACIFIC WREN continuing through December 27, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER in the southwest portion through December 29 and a TENNESSEE WARBLER along the east side path north of the dam through December 28.

A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through December 23.  It has been at the south end of Avila Park below the Willow Street crossing.  Another PALM WARBLER was at Hansen Dam by the southeast corner of the main lake on December 23.  Others were at George Wolfburg Park in Pacific Palisades on December 23 and in Santa Monica on December 26.

A PAINTED REDSTART continued in the southwest part of San Dimas Canyon Park between the restrooms and parking lot through December 28.
