This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 13, 2023.

A TUNDRA SWAN was seen flying over Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on January 8.

The SANDHILL CRANE was at the Rio Hondo Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera continued through January 11.  Enter at Mines Ave. and Paramount Blvd. and check the various basins for the bird.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through January 12.  It has been on the salt pan and near the UCLA boat ramp.

At least five MOUNTAIN PLOVERS continued at the A&G Sod Farm in the Antelope Valley through January 7.  The sod farm is at 40th Street East and Avenue N.

A RED KNOT continued along lower Ballona Creek and on the nearby beach through January 8.

NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds on January 11 and at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve on January 11.

ZONE-TAILED HAWKS were in the vicinity of Kiwanis Park at Grand Ave. in Monrovia through January 12, in Glendora on January 7 and near the Angeles Crest Highway above Gould Mesa on January 7.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was on Santa Catalina Island on January 8.

A DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER continued at Peck Park in San Pedro through January 12.  It has been in the southwest area of the park.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve through January 7.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued below the Willow Street crossing along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through January 11.

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued by the small north shore pond at Bonelli Regional Park through January 8.  Also in this area and along the north shore were a continuing BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, at least two SWAMP SPARROWS, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and a SUMMER TANAGER.

Another HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued on the UCLA campus through January 11.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Scherer Park in Long Beach through January 11.  It has been seen near the wood bridge across from the Atlantic Ave. parking lot.  Another EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Castaic Lagoon through January 8 and one continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through January 12.

A CASSIN’S VIREO was at Alondra Park Reservoir on January 7.

The SEDGE WREN continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through January 7 on the east side of Duckbill Lake.

At least two LAPLAND LONGSPURS continued in the east Antelope Valley through January 7.  They have been in the fields south of 70th Street East and Avenue F.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at the Rio Hondo Spreading Grounds from January 6-7.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area through January 11.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamonga Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 7 on the west side by the sports field.

A SWAMP SPARROW continued along the north side of the Los Angeles River just below the 5 Freeway crossing in Glendale through January 11.

The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 6.  Best access is from the Bette Davis Picnic Area.

A HOODED ORIOLE was in West Los Angeles on January 8 and another continued at the north end of the desert garden at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino through January 7.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach through January 12.

NASHVILLE WARBLERS were at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park through January 8 near the Vermont parking lot entrance and at Entradero Park in Torrance on January 10.

The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued through January 12 in the area outside the Art Gallery.  Google Earth coordinates are 33.9687, -118.4167.

A PALM WARBLER continued at Avila Park in Long Beach (along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street) through January 11. 

The PAINTED REDSTART south of Birdcage Park in Long Beach at 3946 Hackett Ave. through January 12.

Another PAINTED REDSTART continued by 1018 Wellesley Ave. near Brentwood through January 12.

A SUMMER TANAGER was at Redondo Union High School on January 12.  Others were at Grand Hope Park south of downtown Los Angeles on January 8 and continuing in Culver City through January 11.
