This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 12, 2023.
A RED-NECKED GREBE continued at the Ballona Creek mouth near the Pacific Ave. bridge through January 10.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued both on the salt pan and along the channel through January 6.
A MOUNTAIN PLOVER was on San Clemente Island on January 12.
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were along the Los Angeles River at Downey Road in Vernon through January 12 (Google Maps, park here 34.0045, -118.2037) and at Topanga County Beach on January 9.
At least ten YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Playa Del Rey through January 10.
Two SWAINSON’S HAWKS were at Sawpit Wash in Monrovia on January 7.
A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through January 12. One or more birds have been seen at Grand Ave. Park, Sawpit Wash and at Monrovia Recreation Park.
The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Descanso Gardens in La Canada was reported through January 2 in the courtyard area past the visitor’s center.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood on January 6.
A BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates through January 4 near the Arizona Crossing.
TROPICAL KINGBIRDS were in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach (east of the main lake) through January 6, at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera near the east end of Mines Ave through January 6 and along the lower Los Angeles River below Willow Street through January 10.
A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through January 12. Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1409, -118.2880, but the bird moves around the area. A HEPATIC TANAGER also continued in this area, also through January 12.
HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS were at Tournament Park in Pasadena through January 12, along the West Fork of the San Gabriel River (about 2 miles upstream from Highway 39) on January 7 and at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 12 along the inlet east of the large square parking lot on the north shore.
A WESTERN FLYCATCHER was at Eaton Blanche Park in Pasadena on January 9.
An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through January 9.
A BELL’S VIREO continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (south end of the desert garden) through January 6.
WARBLING VIREOS were at the south end of Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on January 8 and in Claremont from January 11-12.
The WINTER WREN continued at Castaic Lagoon through January 10. Google Earth coordinates 34.5091, -118.6135. A SWAMP SPARROW was in this area as well through January 6.
The BROWN THRASHER continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 12 below Monte Verde Park.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in Silver Lake on January 11.
A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued on the west side of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena near the athletic field through January 6.
A SWAMP SPARROW was at Loyola Marymount University and viewed from the north end of parking lot W through January 7.
Another SWAMP SPARROWS was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on January 10 near the large square parking lot on the north shore.
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES were at Wheeler Park in Claremont through January 10, at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 12, along the Los Angeles Aqueduct at East Ave. V and 72nd Street through January 6 and in the Little Rock Creek riparian area on January 6.
An ORCHARD ORIOLE was at Chavez Ravine in Elysian Park on January 6 northeast of the playground area.
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were in the southwest part of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 12, at Wheeler Park in Claremont by the playground area through January 12 and below Monte Verde Park at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 11.
An AMERICAN REDSTART continued at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through January 10.
Another AMERICAN REDSTART was at Bee Canyon in Granada Hills on January 6.
A TENNESSEE WARBLER continued along the east side path north of the dam at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 7. On the west side near the south end of the park (often along the lower wide pathway), a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continued through January 11. Google Maps 34.1891, -118.1776
A CAPE MAY WARBLER continued at Loyola Marymount University through January 6. Google Earth coordinates 33.9688, -118.4170
A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach (below Willow Street at Avila Park) through January 6.
A PAINTED REDSTART continued in the southwest part of San Dimas Canyon Park between the restrooms and parking lot through January 12.
Another PAINTED REDSTART continued at a residence in Arcadia through January 8.
