This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 19, 2023.

A BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on January 17.

A RED-NECKED GREBE continued at the Ballona Creek mouth near the Pacific Ave. bridge through January 11.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE continued in the northern part of Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica through January 18.

Four LESSER NIGHTHAWKS were at Santa Fe Dam on January 17.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued both on the salt pan and along the channel up as far as the 90 Freeway through January 13.

A MOUNTAIN PLOVER continued on San Clemente Island through January 14.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included two at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through January 13, one along the Los Angeles River between Atlantic and Slauson through January 14, others near Downey Road through January 18, near Soto Street on January 14 and continuing at Willow Street (along the LA River) and at Topanga County Beach.

A PACIFIC LOON was at Quail Lake near Gorman on January 15.

A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro on January 19.  This bird was entangled in fishing line and was captured for rehab.

Up to twelve YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Playa Del Rey through January 14.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through January 17.  One or more birds have been seen at Grand Ave. Park, Sawpit Wash and at Monrovia Recreation Park.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was in the east Antelope Valley by 110th Street East and Ave. I on January 15.

The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Descanso Gardens in La Canada was reported through January 18 in the courtyard area past the visitor’s center.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at Hansen Dam in Lake View Terrace on January 14.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the lower Los Angeles River below Willow Street through January 13, at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera near the east end of Mines Ave through January 17, south of Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through January 16 and in Long Beach through January 15.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through January 19.  Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1409, -118.2880, but the bird moves around the area.  A HEPATIC TANAGER also continued in this area, also through January 13.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER continued at Eaton Blanch Park in Pasadena through January 17.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through January 12.  Another was at San Dimas Canyon Park from January 12-19.

A BELL’S VIREO continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (south end of the desert garden) through January 17.

A WARBLING VIREO continued in Claremont through January 14.

The WINTER WREN continued at Castaic Lagoon through January 18.  Google Earth coordinates 34.5091, -118.6135.  A SWAMP SPARROW was in this area as well through January 16.

The BROWN THRASHER continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 18 below Monte Verde Park.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was at the Toyon Landfill in Griffith Park from January 13-15 (limited access) and a LAZULI BUNTING was there on January 13 as well.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS continued in Silver Lake through January 15 and at El Dorado Park in Long Beach through January 17.

The DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued in the Sailboat Cove area of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 15.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO was at the Griffith Observatory on January 17.

A SWAMP SPARROW was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 12 along the inflow channel near the large square parking lot on the north shore.  Another SWAMP SPARROW was at Loyola Marymount University and viewed from the north end of parking lot W through January 14.

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES were at Wheeler Park in Claremont through January 18, along the LA Aqueduct near Little Rock through January 15, along the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 12 and at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve on January 16.

A HOODED ORIOLE continued in the Desert Garden at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino through January 17.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were by the restroom at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale on January 12 (and downstream from there through January 16), continuing at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (in the southwest area) through January 14, at Heartwell Park in Long Beach on January 15, at Hopkins Wilderness Park through January 15, and at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 16.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 16.

An AMERICAN REDSTART continued near the middle of Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through January 17.

A CAPE MAY WARBLER continued at Loyola Marymount University through January 16.  Google Earth coordinates 33.9688, -118.4170

A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach (below Willow Street at Avila Park) through January 13.  Another was on the west side of the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through January 16 and one was at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City (near the dam) on January 14.

PAINTED REDSTARTS continued in the southwest part of San Dimas Canyon Park between the restrooms and parking lot through January 17, in Arcadia through January 14, and in Brentwood through January 18.
